The Pietà is one of Michelangelo Buonarroti 's most famous works , sculpted between 1497 and 1499, when the artist was just 24 years old. Cardinal Jean de Bilhères commissioned it for the Chapel of Santa Petronilla in the Vatican. Made of Carrara marble, the sculpture depicts the Virgin Mary holding the lifeless body of Jesus, recently taken down from the cross. Michelangelo succeeded in ideally blending pain and beauty, depicting a young and serene Madonna, a symbol of purity and acceptance of divine sacrifice. The anatomical perfection and delicate expressions immediately struck a chord with the public. To assert authorship of the work, Michelangelo engraved his name on the band across the Virgin's chest: it is the only work signed by the artist. Today the Pietà is housed in St. Peter's Basilica, protected by a bulletproof glass case. In 1972, it was severely damaged by vandalism, but was painstakingly restored. Considered one of the greatest masterpieces of Renaissance sculpture, the Pietà combines extraordinary technique and spiritual emotion.
