Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, known as Padre Pio, was born in 1887 in Pietrelcina, in the province of Benevento, and from a young age displayed a profound spirituality. He entered the Capuchin order and was ordained a priest in 1910. He is known for his stigmata , wounds resembling those of Christ, which he bore for over fifty years and which aroused great devotion but also skepticism. He spent much of his life in the convent of San Giovanni Rotondo , where he founded the “Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza,” a modern hospital that is still active today. Many faithful attribute miracles and inexplicable healings to him, and his fame spread throughout the world. He was also known for the gift of bilocation and the ability to read hearts . He was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2002 and is today one of the most beloved saints in the Catholic world.
